Wayne's Experience with HydraBalance™ Lubricating Technology

Wayne has been using intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) for over 25 years. In 2019, he began using VaPro™ intermittent catheters, which have brought significant positive changes to his life.

Learn how the catheter Wayne chose helped him to live his life to the fullest

As a teenager in the UK, Wayne was unable to fully empty his bladder which led to frequent urination and bed-wetting. His attempts to manage the problem with medication were unsuccessful, and he was referred to a continence nurse who taught him how to perform ISC.

Initially, the nurse advised Wayne to catheterize only once per day. The infrequent catheterization, however, led to him getting many urinary tract infections (UTIs) and kidney infections, and eventually an antibiotic-resistant infection.

Wayne underwent a kidney transplant and surgery to enlarge his bladder, and was advised to perform ISC whenever he needed to urinate – which was about 4 to 6 times per day. Below, Wayne talks about his experience with ISC, how a switch to using VaPro intermittent catheters improved his quality of life, and his positive impressions of improved VaPro catheters with HydraBalanceTM lubricating technology.

My transition to VaPro intermittent catheters

In 2019, I switched to VaPro catheters because my previous catheter brand had undergone changes that reduced its effectiveness and comfort. I tried various products before selecting VaPro catheters and since then, the improvements in my physical and mental health have been profound.

The pre-lubricated, no-touch system of the VaPro catheters made an immediate difference. Since switching, I haven't had a single new infection. I've also been able to stop using prophylactic antibiotics, which has been a huge relief given my previous experience with antibiotic-resistant infections.

The VaPro catheter also gave me a newfound sense of confidence and freedom. Before, I had to plan my day around access to disabled toilets. Now, I can live and travel without those constraints. In 2023, I flew to Australia and drove up the west coast in a camper van after the World Transplant Games. Before VaPro catheters, I wouldn't have even felt confident getting on the plane.

HydraBalance lubricating technology makes my ISC experience confident and natural

When Hollister introduced HydraBalance lubricating technology as an improvement to its VaPro catheters, I was cautiously optimistic. My first impressions were overwhelmingly positive.

The new tapered catheter tip has made insertion easier and more comfortable. The tip feels like it's the same size as the catheter itself, and the enhanced lubricity makes insertion incredibly smooth, like a pen gliding across the inside of your lip. The catheter goes in effortlessly and comes out just as comfortably, with no irritation. The lubrication lasts throughout the entire process.

In addition, the new packaging is compact and easy to store, which is essential when travelling or competing. The smaller, sleeker design of the catheter packs means I can carry them discreetly, and they look much less intimidating when I show others.

The catheter's transparent design also allows me to monitor my urine closely, which is invaluable for spotting any early signs of infection or issues. Being able to check for blood, mucus, or obstructions easily has given me more control over my health, allowing me to take action quickly if there's a problem.

A holistic impact on my quality of life

The addition of HydraBalance™ lubricating technology to VaPro catheters has had a big impact on my overall quality of life. Because catheterizing is now so easy, comfortable, and frictionless, I'm more likely to do it regularly, which means I stay properly hydrated and significantly reduce my risk of UTIs. The psychological benefits also cannot be overstated. ISC no longer gives me any anxiety; it's simply part of my routine, and one that I feel confident performing.

For healthcare professionals, particularly nurse specialists, I believe it’s essential to look beyond the mechanics of ISC and consider the holistic impact it has on your patients. It's not just about making ISC easier – it's about reducing pain, fear, and restrictions. Thanks to the VaPro intermittent catheters, I can live without the limitations I once faced. And thanks to the HydraBalance lubricating technology I can literally feel the difference.

Recently, my consultant questioned why I no longer required prophylactic antibiotics. When I explained the impact of the catheter change alongside my hygienic ISC routine, she remarked, “It makes you wonder why these aren't prescribed first – it would be cheaper and far better for the patient." This kind of insight shows the importance of a patient-centered approach to ISC management.

Final thoughts on catheters and ISC

The new version of the VaPro catheter has transformed my experience with ISC. The combination of the new tip and frictionless lubrication has made catheterizing event more effortless, comfortable, and free from irritation. These improvements ensure that I can lead a full and active life without fear of complications or discomfort.

I would encourage nurses to think holistically when reviewing patients' ISC practices. Consider how the right catheter can have life-changing effects – not just in terms of physical health, but also in giving patients the confidence and freedom to live without restrictions. For me, HydraBalance lubricating technology has helped me better manage my condition – and I hope that by sharing my experience, others can benefit too.
